NOTICE OF CHILD FIND

The Springfield Public Schools wish to identify all Springfield students who are suspected of having an educational disability, ages three years to twenty-one years, who may qualify for special educational services, and who have not graduated from high school. This would include any student enrolled in public, private schools or home schooled in the district. Additionally, the district wishes to identify any students that may currently be homeless and therefore have certain educational rights under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act.

Public school districts are required to evaluate all children suspected of needing special education services. This includes children who attend private school or are home schooled. This requirement is called Child Find, and it’s part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). (In this law, the school district is referred to as the Local Education Agency or LEA.)

If you suspect a child is in need of special education services and would like the student to be evaluated for special education eligibility, please have the parent/guardian or any interested person contact the Special Education Department at (413) 787-7100 ext. 55621.
