Biography
Barbara Gresham is a longtime Springfield resident with more than 30 years of service to the community and a steadfast commitment to public education. Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, she is a devoted mother of two adult children and a proud grandmother of three grandsons.

Ms. Gresham pursued her professional education in nursing at the University of Georgia and later earned an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Springfield Technical Community College. Her academic and professional background reflects a strong foundation in student health, safety, and advocacy.

For over 20 years, Ms. Gresham served as a Program Nurse with Springfield Head Start, where she worked to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children and families across the city. Her experience in early childhood education and public health continues to inform her leadership and decision-making on the School Committee.

Ms. Gresham represents District 2, Wards 4 and 5 on the Springfield Public School Committee. First elected in 2009, she was re-elected in 2013 and 2017. She currently serves as Chair of the Student and Parent Concerns and School Safety Subcommittee, where she focuses on creating safe, supportive, and equitable learning environments for all students.

Beyond her service on the School Committee, Ms. Gresham is President of the Old Hill Neighborhood Council, a member of the Greater Springfield Dads Make a Difference Committee, and a Trustee Board Member of New Jerusalem C.O.G.I.C., reflecting her deep commitment to community partnership and family engagement.

Ms. Gresham’s leadership and service have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Go Red Leading Ladies of Western Massachusetts (2013), the Change Agent Award (2016) from the Pioneer Valley Project, the William H. Carney Medal of Honor (2017), the Massachusetts Unsung Heroines Award (2017), the Lift Every Voice Community Service Award (2018), the Women of Excellence Award (2018), the MICAH Award for Leadership and Commitment (2019), the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Award for Excellence in Education (2022), and the Community Service Award (2024) presented by Stone Soul.

Ms. Gresham remains committed to advancing student achievement, school safety, and strong partnerships between families, schools, and the Springfield community.
