Biography

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, a native of Springfield, Massachusetts, is the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history and currently serves as Chairman of the Springfield School Committee. A lifelong advocate for Springfield’s students, Mayor Sarno is dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education, regardless of their zip code.

First elected Mayor in 2007, Mayor Sarno is now serving his historic sixth term, during which he has championed initiatives to strengthen Springfield Public Schools (SPS) and expand educational opportunities. Under his leadership, the district became the first in the Commonwealth to offer free, full-day pre-kindergarten for every 3- and 4-year-old, maintained music and arts programs in every school, and invested nearly $1 billion in new school construction and renovations — the largest school investment in Massachusetts history.

As Chair of the School Committee, Mayor Sarno works closely with the Superintendent, school staff, families, and the community to advance programs that improve graduation rates, reduce dropout rates, and provide students with the resources and support they need to succeed. During his tenure, the district’s graduation rate increased from 52% in 2011 to 86% in 2021, while the dropout rate declined to just 1.9%.

Mayor Sarno’s commitment to Springfield’s youth extends beyond academics. He has been a consistent advocate for programs addressing youth mental health, student safety, and educational equity, ensuring that schools are places where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

A lifelong Springfield resident, Mayor Sarno began his public service as a City Councilor, City Council President, and Executive Director of the South End Community Center. His decades of leadership have been marked by a focus on community engagement, public safety, fiscal responsibility, and educational excellence.

Mayor Sarno and his wife, Carla, are proud parents of two daughters, Cassandra and Chiara, and together with their family, continue to be active members of the Springfield community.
