The Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) Program Application Process – 2024-2025

The timeframe to apply for the METCO program for the 2024-2025 academic year will be from February 1st to April 1st, 2024.  The goals and purpose of the METCO program are to expand educational opportunities, increase diversity, and reduce racial isolation by permitting students in Springfield to attend public schools in other communities that have agreed to participate.  To apply and be eligible for the program the child must be a resident of Springfield. The participating host communities in the Springfield METCO Program are East Longmeadow, Hampden/Wilbraham, Longmeadow and Southwick-Tolland.

To cast a METCO ballot, click the red button below during the timeframe listed above (February 1st- April 1st). Parents/guardians needing assistance with completing the ballot may visit the Springfield Public Schools SAS Center, 91 School Street, during regular business hours.  A ballot for the program does not guarantee acceptance.  Assignment to the program is based on a lottery by grade level.  The lottery will be run in mid-April, however, whether your child has been given a slot in a METCO district will be unknown until late Spring (just prior to the close of school).  The number of openings available in each grade level is determined by the school committees of the host districts and students will be assigned based on their lottery numbers.  Parents are not able to select the district they wish their children to attend.

Transportation is provided as part of the METCO program, however bus stops are established in the 01109 zip code and parents/guardians are responsible for bringing their children to and from the bus stops in both the morning and in the afternoon.

Please note that if you have applied for METCO in the past and your child was not accepted and wish to apply again, you must resubmit another application (i.e. applications to not carry over from one year to the next).  Once a child is accepted into the program, they do not need to reapply yearly; the child is able to remain in the METCO program until the end of their schooling.
